in my early aughts, haunted house creations were strong signs leading us to our love of interior space planning. one of my most cherished childhood memories is a weekend I spent with my aunt, uncle and young cousins. to add some fun to a halloween party, my uncle and i transformed his basement into a "haunted house." we divided the space using bed sheets hung from overhead floor joists.

The flimsy partitions formed a winding path that utilized many a hair pin turn that may or may not have been a subconscious nod to the late great le corbusier. fake cobwebs, oversized plastic spiders, streamers and hand-made signs reading "beware" adorned the creation.

the grand finale - me jumping out from behind a door and spraying silly string into the air of screaming 6-year-olds - the pathway featured very intentional design features meant to manipulate how the user experienced the volume of the space. we could not figure out which was more.

if any of the kids out there show an interest in creating an inhabitable wonderland themed with a spooky spirit, celebrate it. you might just be inspiring the next great interior designer.
